Simple Things You Can Do
to Protect Marin's Water and Wildlife

Q. Do you leave fishing lines and hooks behind when they break?

A. Monofilament fishing line can be lethal to seals, fish and other animals. The thin line can cause abrasions that become infected and also prevents the ensnared animal from moving about to catch food and dodge predators. WildCare's Terwilliger Nature Education and Wildlife Rehabilitation Center has initiated the Fishing Line Initiative that provides fishing line recycling bins around Marin. Line collected in these bins is sent to a company where it is melted down and used in making other products. Furthering efforts to keep our waterways and wildlife safe, hooks deposited in these bins will also be disposed of properly.

For location of bins, or how to become involved, call WildCare at 453-1000 or visit the San Rafael facility where the first bin was located at 76 Albert Park Lane, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., 7 days a week.
