Cornus sericea
    flowers: May-June
              back
Creek dogwood   Deciduous leaves to 3",
in opposing pairs, prominently veined,
purplish in fall. Veins extrude white thread
when broken. Small cream flowers in clusters.
Ht: to 10 ft.

Symphocarpus albus     flowers: May-July
             back
Snowberry  Deciduous, thin, pale green
leaves to 1 1/2" in opposing pairs; usually
oval, but variable in shape. Bell-shaped flowers
white to pink. Berries to 1/2". Ht: to 5ft.


Rhamnus californica   
 flowers: April-July                  back
Coffeeberry
   Evergreen leaves to 3", dark
blue-green with parallel veins not reaching
leaf edges. Twigs stout, purple-brown.
Berries dark, 1/2", oval. Ht: to 8ft.


Heteromeles arbutifolia   
 flowers: June-July                    back
Toyon
   Evergreen lustrous leaves to 3 1/2",
with short prickles. Twigs stout, reddish-brown.
Small white flowers followed by berries in
winter. Ht: to 8ft.


Holodiscus discolor   
 flowers: May-August                back
Creambush  Deciduous leaves to
1 1/2", oval-diamond shaped, toothed
with prominent veins, velvety. Straight,
brittle twigs with lighter-colored lines.
Ht: to 8ft.



Corylus cornuta    
 flowers: February-March
              
back
Hazel   Deciduous leaves to 2 1/2",
coarsely toothed with prominent veins,
slightly bristly. Flexible twigs, bristly when
young. Male flowers, catkins; female, minute,
red. Ht: to 12ft.

Note: leaf length includes the stalk; 'leaflets' are subdivisions of a leaf, which, if deciduous, falls as a whole.
