Acer macrophyllum
    flowers: April-May
              back
Big-leaf maple   Deciduous leaves to 12"
with 5 lobes, turning yellow in fall. Twigs
stout. Bark grey-brown, with shallow
furrows. Seeds winged. Ht: to 80ft.

Acer negundo     flowers: March-April
                 back
Box-elder Deciduous pale yellow-green
leaves to 8" with 3 lobed leaflets. Bark
dark. Flowers of male tree hang in pink
tassels; female produces winged seeds.
Ht: to 40ft.

Salix lucinda spp. lasiandra    flowers: March-April
             back
Yellow willow  Deciduous leaves to 5",
long-pointed, finely toothed, with pairs
of tiny glands near base. Twigs yellow.
Bark dark and furrowed. Ht:to 50ft.



Salix lasiolepis    flowers: February-March
             back
Arroyo willow  Deciduous leaves to 4",
shiny above, pale below, widest beyond
the middle. Bark of smaller trunks smooth-
barked. Flowers appear before leaves. Ht:to 35ft.



Alnus rhombifolia   
 flowers: January-February
                
 back
White alder   Deciduous leaves to 3 1/2"
with distinct veins, small teeth. Bark smooth
and grey, aging dark and fractured. Red alder
has minutely curled-under leaf edges. Ht: to 60ft.

Fraxinus latifolia    flowers: March-May
          back
Oregon Ash   Deciduous leaves to 13", with
5-7 leaflets. Dark opposing leafbuds contrast
with grey mature twigs. Bark dark and fractured.
Female trees bear winged seeds. Ht: to 50ft.

 

Note: leaf length includes the stalk; 'leaflets' are subdivisions of a leaf, which, if deciduous, falls as a whole.
